Aconite Leaved Buttercup (Ranunculus aconitifolius)

Although this is common in pasture and favours ground where it’s fertilised by cow dung the cows themselves avoid it. The name aconite refers to Aconitine which is a poisonous alkaloid produced by members of the aconite family, this acts as a neurotoxin and in high doses will cause respiratory paralysis and cardiac arrest.

Early Purple Orchid (Orchis mascula)

This is a highly colourful flower found in mountain pastures, this particular one is near the summit of La Berra in canton Fribourg. It’s also known as “Dead Man’s Thumb” in some regions.
In the early 1800′s the roots were thought to be an aphrodisiac, there’s no active ingredient that suggests this is true though.

The plan was to park near Charmey and walk along the ridge to La Berra, it was supposed to be a very small ascent but I parked at a different alpage from the one I originally intended which added a hundred metres or so to the climb.
