lesser periwinkle

lesser periwinkle (Vinca minor)

lesser periwinkle, Vinca minor, April-May 15-20cm high

This isn’t really an alpine plant at all, it’s found in forest areas around old human settlements typically. It’s interesting as it doesn’t reproduce using seeds like many plants but instead shoots out runners. The spread of the plant is almost solely due to human activity in woodlands.

Fribourg

Another local trip on the mountain bike, this time with Julie though. Along the way we found this incredible statue of a horse made from horseshoes, it’s really an amazing piece of work and stands outside quite a nice restaurant which I’d not been aware was there previously.

We spent quite some time going through local communal forests on various tracks, it’s always interesting as the tracks move over time so I’ve never got an accurate map and you can never rely on any particular track being passable.

In the woods a lot of flowers are in full bloom now, above left is the white colored wood sorrel and the purple flower is a hairy violet.

The other white flower is a wood anemone  which are pretty common this time of year and the bed of purple flowers are lesser periwinkles. Close up this is a vivid and and attractive flower :
