winter’s here, time for snowshoes

Ok, maybe not quite yet and although the summer’s been a bit damp we’re expecting a fine autumn and some great walking here in the Swiss Alps.

But, the flyers for winter snowshoeing have just arrived. I printed these a little early as we’re getting a lot of people asking for details and I’d not got anything to give them. I think our program will probably expand a little and there’s a couple of excursions I’ve got planned but not been able to confirm all details so we’ll be adding some things later.

In the meantime, here’s the flyer! It will be available in local stores and tourist offices as normal and here, at the B&B L’Epicéa as well of course.

We’re particularly pleased to announce that we’re providing snowshoes for trips! We decided that renting snowshoes was a big extra expense for clients and we wanted to offer a great deal. For a week we think it’s an offer worth 80 to 100 chf!

snowshoe magazine : Taking the ‘Light and Air Cure’ in the Alpes Vaudoises

Just a link to an article (pdf) I wrote for Snowshoe Magazine :

Taking the ‘Light and Air Cure’ in the Alpes Vaudoises

It’s an introduction to the area around Leysin and the Vaud Alps and looks at a three snowshoeing routes as a taster for the area. Leysin itself is an interesting place and has a little history so it’s a good base for snowshoeing trips.

Les Monts-Chevreuils

This area is well known to us but I’ve never actually been there snowshoeing so it’s been on my todo list for a while. So, yesterday when we had some time we went round the Le Lécherette and set out for Les Monts-Chevreuils with the target of the top of the old ski station and the small peak behind. The lifts at Le Lécherette weren’t running yesterday as the cover was a bit thin for alpine skiing but the snow for raquettes was just fine. It was a little wet at village level and stuck to the snowshoes a little but a hundred or so metres higher it was just fine and the snow on the north slopes was really excellent.

Although we’d taken a sandwich we stopped at the Cabane des Monts Chevreuils which would have been the top of the old ski station. The lift stopped running back in 2001 which is before we lived here and I’ve never been on it. The restaurant is still running and open quite a few days in the winter, it’s quite big inside and fairly modern so it seems a shame it’s not getting used too much.
