For the first and, what I hope is the last time, we were able to drive all the way up to Pierre du Moëllé on Christmas Day. There were a couple of small patches of snow and ice on the road but nothing that was a real obstacle. But, given these are the conditions we’ve got then it was a great place to go for a high-level festive walk. Fortunately, the sun was out and the views over the region were quite excellent.
We decided not to take snowshoes today, it’s a 50:50 thing in places, the crampons and grip would have been useful in places but the weight saving is worthwhile and the south-facing slopes are mostly snow-free. By contrast, Pic Chaussy a couple of days ago it was better on snowshoes as it’s mostly north facing and still 90% snow cover to the summit.
