Although the piste conditions don’t look great there’s still some fantastic snowshoeing around the area. The weather is superb for snowshoeing really; fresh but no cloud and quite sunny so the views are sensational. Yesterday we went over to Isenau, the small ski area above Les Diablerets. The cable car is still running so it’s possible to ride up to the snowline. From there we snowshoed up to the ridge and then climbed the small peak at the back of the ski area looking over Arnensee (a small reservoir).
I think this is most certainly a better day out than dodging crowds and bare patches on the limited pistes that are operating. Our snowshoes are quite robust and we can easily walk over sections of rock or earth. Where the snow cover is thin and icy the crampons and spikes provide enough grip to move securely.
And, of course, while there’s no other people around we do see a lot of wildlife with a group of chamois taking advantage of the exposed slopes to graze.
