Monts Chevreuils

Les Monts Chevreuils is an abandoned ski station in the next valley, it’s one of my favorite places for ski touring and snowshoeing, great slopes and a really nice refuge on the top serving excellent food. I would have guessed it would have been busy yesterday, mid-week, good snow, better forecast than the other days are usually enough to bring out a few local skiers but we saw half a dozen other people all day. Parking at Les Moulins seemed a small gamble, lower than the La Lecherette on the other side but north facing but with the possibility of better snow on the north face. It’s also the longer climb and a longer ski down!

Skiing off the summit was quite excellent with a couple of pitches down untracked slopes, followed by a short boot through the forest with a stream crossing before rejoining the main descent route still on great snow to about 1000m. From there, we cover a hundred metres of descent on lightly covered but frozen grass before finally coasting to a stop about 30m above the car park. By that time, it was nearly dark and snowing heavily.

Along with the Grand St Bernard Hospice the other week, the two best ski days this season. And the day where my new Dynafit TLT 6 boots really started to feel totally natural with the flex becoming instinctive, the combination of the Dynastar 87 HM, Dynafit ST’s and the TLT6 really ski superbly in the range of conditions on a day like that.
