Avalanche Education – Mountain Safety Info

This is a bit of a cross-over post, like those episodes of CSI where the guys from New York turn up in Las Vegas. I’m a director of British Association of International Mountain Leaders (baiml.org) and the President of the Union of International Mountain Leader Associations (uimla.org). In my UIMLA role I’ve managed the process for UIMLA to join the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (the UIAA) and International Commission for Alpine Rescue (ICAR). In fact, UIMLA people have been involved with ICAR and UIAA projects for a long time so this formalises the relationship.

Most recently UIMLA has joined MountainSafety.info which is a project led by Manuel Genswein who is well known in the avalanche research field. Before our membership became formal we had a number of people from UIMLA working in MountainSafety.info on various projects.

UIMLA has already run a couple of session on this by Zoom. We held a trainer event in early January and in late January another session for about 400-500 people on the project and asked Manuel to present some of his work. This was a huge success and I would say it’s been the UIMLA project I’ve received the most positive feedback about.

Obviously this time is far from ideal for us all but we do have a chance to do these remote sessions and get people from 34 countries engaged.
