Portes du Soleil from Morgins over the Portes d’Hiver and Col de Chesery. I’ve done this trail a few times but I think only in the spring and autumn. Yesterday was a bit autumnal and needed to put a light merino layer on to keep the wind off. I’ll mention that I’m wearing a Simond Merino hoodie which is perfect for the bike. It’s a climbing garment which means it’s quite long and won’t ride up when you’re on the bike. As a merino material it’s quite light and a perfect balance without being too hot while still keeping me comfortable on the cooler cols and fast descents.
One obvious advantage of being here when it’s high season is that the mountain chalets are open and I had a nice lunch with an omelette made with the local Abondance cheese which is a classic mountain cheese from this area.
